WELCOME to the nanomech,
the European Symposium on nano-mechanical Testing. This symposium is organised by SURFACE, Hückelhoven, Germany and the Nano-Competence-Centre for Ultra-thin Functional Coatings, Dresden, Germany as a logical consequence of current trends in materials science.
Every September SURFACE invites the European community of nanomechanical testing to this meeting in Hückelhoven.
Over the years it became a standard meeting place for this specific research field and SURFACE is proud to see an increasing interest of participants from all over the world. The nanomech has registered
attendees from all around Europe, from USA, Japan, China, Iran, India and Brazil.
The major topic of this year, the effect of the shrinking size of a measured volume to the macroscopic understanding of the mechanical behaviour of material is a very important area.
I would like to welcome everybody and wish all of us a successful nanomech meeting.
SURFACE has started it´s activities for a symposium for nanomechanical testing as a reflection of show experiences on major US material science conferences. At those conferences I met even more of our own customers than on local conferences in Europe. During our successful opening of the SURFACE nanoLab in 1998 we have seen the interest for nanomechanical testing. We have started with the first meeting in 2000 – and since this time every year we were able to find the interest of many European material scientists to come to Hückelhoven. In the last two years the interest from countries all over the world is increasing steadily.
Is there any difference between the nanomech compared to other scientific conferences? Yes and No! First of all, it is a meeting place for USERS of nanomechanical test systems – independent of the individual brand. So it is a place to exchange experiences with the different products and share scientific results. I can say that from the very beginning we always had users from all major nanoindenter manufacturers at the meeting – from the scientific point of view there exists no differences. But you will not find an exhibition of products or attendees of our major competitors during the meeting, although they may present important new developments and scientific results via a video conference contribution or have them presented by independent co-authors.
I´d like to thank all members of the scientific committee for their great support in the final evaluations of the contributed papers as well as my team for the commitment and the hard work to make all the nanomech meetings successful.
